Perfect Cinnamon Toast

Cinnamon Toast was an essential part of my childhood.  You've heard me mention complain that I never got sugar-laced cereals growing up, so this was my "work around."  Sneaky right?

Looking back though I was doing it all wrong.

How do you mess up cinnamon toast you ask?
Seems pretty self explanatory.

toast bread
butter bread
sprinkle cinnamon
sprinkle sugar
eat

Problem is sprinkling the cinnamon and sugar separately (and with my unsteady hand) led to uneven coverage, with cinnamon-overload taking place on some spots, while others were completely void of the spice.

Solution?

Mix it in the butter first.  Genius.
Oh, and whatever you do don't toast the bread, instead bake it in the oven, so it becomes caramelized and perfectly crispy on top.  Of course leave it to the Pioneer Women to perfect this breakfast staple.  She's my hero!

Armed with this information, I think it's safe to say we'll be eating this for breakfast for the rest of the week.  Making up for lost time begins now....

Perfect Cinnamon Toast

Ingredients:
4 slices bread of choice
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp vanilla
dash nutmeg

Method:
Preheat oven to 350F.
Mix sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg in butter.  Stir to completely combine.
Spread mixture onto slices of bread, completely covering the surface all the way to the edges.
Place toast on a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes.  Turn on the broiler and broil until golden brown and bubbling.  Watching so as not to burn them.
Remove from oven and cut slices into halves diagonally.
